The "Elders Voice" provincial newsletter is currently reaching about 5000 Elders, their spouses and other household members each month in British Columbia through their area's Elders Contact People.

About Our History

How This Center Began

Following are quotes from a letter written by Shirley Leon, Coqualeetza Cultural Education Centre Society, August 2001; the idea for this center was originally suggested by their Society.

"I do want to encourage you to seriously consider applying for monies to fund a Communication Center for Aboriginal Elders in the province."

"The idea for a communication center is to have a Newsletter and Web Site to accommodate as many communities as possible. The Elders are the forgotten group. Facts clearly indicate that society in general is not prepared for the growing population of the elderly, accommodation wise, medical services, etc., etc."

"This Newsletter/Web Site, and reports back from Elders Groups, would certainly fill that gap somewhat with a more global communication strategy. It would be similar to the disability Network approach in that it provides a tool for the elderly."
